(O2) Mostly Promising: the challenge of appraising and synthesising non-randomised studies of complex community-based interventions

This presentation will reflect on the conceptual and methodological challenges encountered by the What Works Centre for Wellbeing’s Communities of Place Evidence Programme in assessing complex interventions delivered at the level of the community. Using examples from a systematic review of community infrastructure to boost social relations, we will reflect on different approaches to assessing the validity of individual studies and the body of evidence across the whole review. We will discuss challenges of synthesising this diverse body of evidence, including a range of study designs with outcomes measured at individual or community levels.
